I love building things. I am a software developer (both as a regular job and a side project). I get to be creative when I'm developing (this web page for instance), but it's different than using your hands to create something that other people can physically enjoy. The process of taking a flat piece of lumber and working it into a piece of furniture or art is calming. The organized clutter of plane shavings and smell of the wood makes me feel at home.
I'm not sure how I got started with wood. I guess it's been a lifelong process. My dad is a pretty handy guy. Aside from building 85% of his 3500 sqft home, there were always odd jobs to do for other people. It was hard not to learn anything. There was also shop class in high school, and my carpenter's helper job before university. I've picked up a few things over the years. I'm also trying new things to make the process more enjoyable and make my projects turn out better.
I've built lots of different things over the years, including computer desks, sheds, play structures, armoires and closet organizers, bathroom vanities, and even an entire set of kitchen cupboards with my in-laws. I'm not much for carving or turning, but everything else is pretty much fair game, as long as it's made of wood.
I would love to build something for you. Take a look at the gallery to see what I've done in the past. Let me know what you're thinking of, and I'll let you know if I can make it happen. There's a good chance I will make it happen - it's what I love doing.
Give me a shout (via our Evening Design contact form) and we'll see if there's something I can do for you.
